A home away from home
“A home away from home. It sounds cliché, I know. But for La Serrana it really does stand true.
After being on the road for a while, jumping from city to city, sometimes you just want to find a place to stop and put your bags down. La Serrana is that place. Breakfast is cooked for you each day and the most delicious dinners are served each weeknight. The days are spent hiking, horseback riding, visiting coffee farms – or (my personal favourite pastime) lying in a hammock with good book. It is not a party hostel but rather a social one; the people the hostel attracts are of the social variety, with stories and experiences worth sharing, ones you will sit chatting with over a coffee or a beer or three.
Combine all this with gorgeous surroundings, comfortable beds, hot water, cleanliness, internet, and the friendliest staff ,and there you have the reason why you will hear so many people staying at La Serrana saying “I only intended on coming for a couple of nights but I am still here…”
One of my favourite hostels in South America
Wow, what a place! Loved it there. No wonder they say don’t say goodbye there, just see you again soon. The location, atmosphere, staff, other travellers… all amazing.
There’s a smallish kitchen for cooking your own meals, and you can opt to pay for a dinner prepared by the staff, which was delicious. There’s a TV room with DVDs, or better yet, there’s ample space to enjoy the surrounds, walking around, sitting and reading, whatever.
I’ll be back
Never wanted to leave
La Serrana has the most fantastic location, settled between mountains and some of the most gorgeous scenery Colombia has to offer. You can’t go to this place and not feel completely refreshed. No wonder most of the travellers there are return vistors, or people who have come for a day and stayed for a month. The staff are amazing, beds really comfortable, and there are some great common areas to meet all of the other über-relaxed travellers.
Also one of the best breakfasts that I’ve had in a hostel, served in its own restaurant-style cabana.
The only place to stay!
One of the best hostels that I have stayed in. It was recommended to me by a fellow traveller, and the first time I went I loved it so much that I had to go back. I don´t know if it is the tranquility, the awesome and relaxed attitude of the guys that work there, or the intrigue of the town itself, but La Serrana has that something extra that every traveller looks for.
Highly recommende – if you want to get out for a horse ride, hike, coffee tour, or even just chill at the hostel by the bonfire and enjoy the amazing scenery and millions of fireflies that come out at night!!
Oooh, and the showers are INCREDIBLE!
We spent 6 nights here (after only planning to spend 4) and could easily have stayed far longer. We had a private ensuite room which was a great size and very comfortable. The showers were brilliant (hot and good pressure) and the wifi was reliable and fast. Meals in the hostel were delicious and healthy and a great way to meet other travellers. The views from the hostel are great by day and by night (fields full of fireflies). The town of Salento is a short walk away and absolutely charming. There’s loads to do here – hiking, coffee-farms, horse-riding, relaxing. Highly recommend!!
A true home for travelers – just go there now!
the best hostel in colombia, if not the continent!
to begin with, the location of this amazing place is the best- a short nice walk from the great town salento, in a beautiful spot surrounded by valleys, mountains and all the stunning views of the coffee zone.
in the night you can see the magical fireflies doing a crazy electro party where all the surrounding valleys are filled with their little lights, like stars on the earth!!
but none of this is what makes this place so great,
the stuff (jon, carol, brett, olga & the groovy kitchen ladies), the dogs, the cozy movies area, the great selection of movies, the great breakfast, the brownies and the popcorn machine (!) just create the warmest good welcome feeling of a true home.
go there! enjoy, rest and feel your travel mojo with the home-like feeling!
We came here with the intention of staying two nights and ended up staying a week. Camping spots are great, and relatively quiet, the view at night and in the morning are spectacular. At night the valley lights up with thousands of fireflies. Breakfast is good, and dinner is great. The only risk is wanting to stay longer!
I stayed in Salento for three happy weeks and am struggling to find anywhere to better it in Colombia. La Serrana is the most peaceful and beautiful place that I have stayed in South America so far and I will be back one day for sure. The best views, the best food, and the best people in town. Don’t go anywhere else!
Maybe my favorite place in the world…
The first time I stayed in La Serrana, I did it out of a recommendation from a fellow traveler who claimed it was the best place she’d ever stayed – not only for the setting and accommodations, but, even more so, for the people she met there. She turned out to be 100% right. I myself fell in love with La Serrana because of the relaxed atmosphere, the gorgeous surroundings, the delicious food and, most significantly, the people who work and stay there. I highly recommend this place for anyone who enjoys nature and people (which is probably everyone, right?). make sure to bring positive energy and openness and lungs ready for breathing fresh air, and you will love this place. And maybe I’ll see you there, as I can’t seem to stay away too long!
